Become a Disaster Volunteer

Would you like to help your community in times of disaster? Consider becoming a part of the Disaster Volunteer Database.

  • Do I need any special skills to be a disaster volunteer?

In an emergency or disaster situation, there will be a need for people with specific skills and training as well as those with generalized skills and a willingness to help. Do not let lack of training or background in emergency services prevent you from signing up.

  • Is training available?

Yes. By signing up as a disaster volunteer, you will be kept informed of training opportunities that may be of interest to you.

  • What does a disaster volunteer do?

Disaster volunteer opportunities will vary depending on the type of disaster, the setting and what disaster phase you are involved with (mitigation, preparedness, response, or recovery.) Activities may include assisting at shelters, helping with clean up, answering phones, babysitting, construction and many more.
  • How do I sign up?

Go to About Us/Data Sources Disaster Volunteer Registration form. Print out the form, complete and mail to: Department of Human Services, 300 Indian Springs Road, Suite 300, Indiana, PA 15701.

  • How do I learn more?

Contact Beth Ann Fanning at the Indiana County Department of Human Services, (724) 463-8200 or icdhsvol@comcast.net, for more information about disaster preparedness or volunteering.
